I’d suggest looking at reportage since February 2022 from The Intercept and then DropSite News about Pakistan. Though denied, it is clear that the U.S. at the very least indirectly told Pakistan’s military that overthrowing Imran Khan would lead to better ties. They were quite displeased that Khan went to Russia soon after the invasion of Ukraine and publicly declared neutrality.

IMF shenanigans were provided for Pakistan in exchange for munitions to be sent to Ukraine; munitions that the West does not have the capacity to produce.

The first reason to come to mind is to pressure India with the "stick" over its Russia ties.

But the relations have also improved in their own right notably since the Israel-Iran War. It seems likely that Pakistan helped the US who then helped Israel with intelligence on Iran during the war.

There is also the tertiary motivation to step up engagement so Pakistan doesn't become a Laos-type vassal to China. Pakistan is greatly populated &amp; militarized, giving China access to the Indian Ocean so this is important for the US to compete/counter.

That last reason though only matters because the US feels India does not do enough to counter China particularly in the Pacific (India is against the militarization of the Quad).

As a Chinese, I think the answer is simple: because Pakistan proved its worth in the air war with India and raised its international status.


If the U.S. continues to do nothing to Pakistan, Pakistan will completely fall back to China (in fact, Pakistan is already deeply cooperating with China politically, economically, and militarily), and the U.S. has nothing to squeeze Pakistan with, so adopting a soft policy is the only option.


The US realizes that India is not strong enough to clamp down on China - they are even at a disadvantage in a military confrontation with Pakistan, so how can they expect India to pressure China?

Improving relations with India without fully alienating Pakistan has always been how the USA has done things. 

An alienated Pakistan moves closer to China, while an alienated India moves closer to Russia. 

However, considering how weak Russia is now, perhaps this is shifting, and India moving closer to Russia isn't as much of a concern.

Rumors are rife that Pakistani F-16s might be eligible for V (Blk 70) upgrades.

Clearly, Pakistan is currently in the good books of USA because:

1-Pakistan showed extreme composure and calm and de-escalatory motives during recent Indo Pak clashes even though India attacked Pakistan with absolute no reasoning and got its ass whipped

2-Pakistan downed each of India's top fighter jets, Rafales, MKI, M2K, Mig 29 with no loss of own. Pakistan could have shot down way more. There is nothing India has that can out range Pl15 missiles.

3-USA wasn't expecting this, and US intelligence informed Trump that Indians are about to be sent to oblivion on May 9th, which is what forced USA to get into ceasefire talks

4-USA knows and world knows that Pakistan is a powerful country in south asian and central asian region. India is no where near what it portrays itself to be. India cannot win from Pakistan let alone counter China.

5-Americans have been pretty pissed with Indians, H1Bs, Tech ofshoring etc. So Americans themselves don't have soft corner for Indians anymore

This article is way too simplistic and paints US of being something of a big-brother or a noble benefactor which it isn't.

If US wanted India to engage with it against China, then why does it's President continuously deride India and make snide remarks both in Press conferences and on Social media.

And this isn't the President alone but several other high ranking officials too. And then there's the 50% tariffs against India alone while both Pakistan and China are nowhere close to that.

Then for whatever reason, a sitting US President engages in a meet with the Army Chief and also allows speak of nuclear threat from US soil.

The author states that US wishes to engage both India and Pakistan but actual actions differ far from that.

There exists a huge misconception that China wants to fight the US. That is not true. The US is China's largest export market. They want Pakistan to have better relations with the US because it benefits China in the long run.

China isn't bothered with Pakistan having relations with USA. The only thing that matters to China is China's interests. If Pakistan can provide incentives to China, it wouldn't care if we announced to be a state of USA. But the only reason why Pakistan is tilting towards USA, or has done so throughout history, is because relations with USA determine who runs the government in Pakistan. Very unfortunate, but true.

It’s not a tilt. Pakistan has always tried to position itself as a middleman between the USA and China by maintaining strong positive relationships with both. During the war in Afghanistan that relationship with the US became a little strained and you are seeing it being restored to how it was.

It's in China's best interest for Pak and US to have stronger relations. Diversification is good. ADB helping with CPEC funding, ~40% of all foreign direct investment of the fiscal year being non-Chinese, trade opening with ASEAN partners, military pact with KSA etc. this all helps Pak in relying less on China all while still growing. China knows Pakistan will always prioritise them first no matter what happens, Khawaja Asif said this last month. So, I don't think it affects anything negatively.

It isn't a either/or option.

India is more engaged with the US then with Russia. Our trade with the US is exponentially more, as are the number of Indians living in the US., or studying there, or the number of JVs in each others countries, or investments etc.

Russia has been a country with whom we have good relations, and buy arms and oil for which there is currently no alternative.

Until Trump's impulsive and irrational policies, the US did not have a problem with our relationship with Russia. It has taken 5 US administrations, to slowly but consistently move away from supporting Pak, to opposing its support for terrorists and not equating it with India.

India can't be forced to crash its economy or national security, by not buying Russian weapons or oil. We have reduced our dependence for both. That should be good enough for the US administration. Punishing India, will move us closer to both China and Russia.

If the US wants to cosy up to the country that hosted Osama, I suppose saner minds in the US will soon realise the folly of it. India's policy will be to do nothing, apart form try to get a more rational trade deal.

We could possibly get India to dump Russia, but we’d need to deliver huge incentives and be able to secure all of their energy demands. India likes to play both sides in the US vs Russia game but isn’t truly connected to either, they’ll make a self-interested strategic decision on who to align with.

Pakistan is (or at least should be IMO) America's chief partner and strongest ally in South Asia. The degradation of American-Pakistani relations (especially since the GWOT) is the greatest threat to American power in the region, and whatever needs to be done to save this alliance, should be done.

The chief problem in this relationship is that the US has failed to provide Pakistan with the sort of benefits China has, not just in terms of arms. In fact arms are not the important thing. China's investment in Pakistani infrastructure and CPEC have not been matched by America, and this risks America losing Pakistan to China. A combination of political and economic investment is what is needed to rebuild the Pakistan alliance.

As for India, as you can probably guess I am not in favor of any form of India-US alliance. While I wish the Indian people well our destinies should not be linked.

Between AI and the Cold War sequel mixed with India's history of non-alignment, it's inevitable that the US and India will move apart. What will be interesting is how fast this movement occurs. It could be a snap that leaves tariffs in place plus revocation of visas for work and education or just a slow decline as a managed stopover from the Chinese manufacturing dependency.

It's going to be a bit of both, and something we've already seen happen. Both countries are well aware of why the other is choosing Russia or Pakistan. I'll try to break it down

For India, Russia is one of their friendliest neighbors in a unstable and unfriendly neighborhood. However, their relationship is largely transactional and built on the 1971 Bangladeshi Liberation War, which resulted in India arming itself with Russian (Soviet) military machinery, although, there has been an increasing trend to decouple from Russia in this regard.

For America, Pakistan occupies a strategic position in Asia (or Central Asia, if you want to call it that). It was a beneficial relationship to have during Afghanistan, and is even more important given their dislike of Iran. Despite this, US-Pak relations did witness a "decline" after Bin Laden was found in Pakistan which is around the time that America and India started to warm their relationship. Not to mention, Pakistan's increasing relationship with China, especially, in the military sector

India and US both view China as a threat. In my opinion, I see Trump's Presidency as a speed bump between these two, and something that will be waited out before relations start warming again. Neither side will completely ditch their geopolitical partners, but will slowly "downgrade" or at the very least, simply balance, their relations with them, due to internal policy calculations rather than a foreign policy motivation to get closer to America/India
